Information about Advance Child Tax Credit Payments
As part of the American Rescue Plan Act, many New Mexicans will begin receiving a Child Tax Credit payment starting July 15. Eligible families can receive nearly half of their 2021 total child tax credit this year in six monthly payments. The remaining amount can be claimed on their 2021 tax returns. You should be aware that this is an advance and, if taken, could cause your next tax refund to be lower than normal or could cause you to have to pay additional taxes in the future. You can opt-out of receiving this advance on the IRS website.
Please visit the IRS Advance Child Tax Credit Page for more details and to manage your payment or check your eligibility status.
For those with bank account information tied to their 2019 or 2020 tax return, the payment will be electronically deposited into that account quickly and easily. If there’s no bank account tied to a taxpayer, recipients will receive a paper check or debit card, which could take weeks to arrive.
Recipients who were not required to file a tax return, but are interested in receiving their payment by direct deposit, can add bank account information using the online non-filer tool available on the IRS website. From there, click on the Child Tax Credit image, select Non-Filers: Submit Your Information and follow the instructions. You will need your account number and financial institution’s routing number.
