RMH Franchise Holdings, which owns and operates Applebee’s restaurants in 15 states, announced on March 2, 2018 it experienced a data breach affecting 167 restaurant locations between December 2017 and January 2018.

RMH does not operate any of the 20 New Mexico locations in Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Los Lunas, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Alamogordo, Clovis, Farmington, Gallup, Hobbs, Las Cruces, and Roswell; therefore, they were not affected by the breach. Nearby states affected include Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, and Wyoming.

Company officials said an investigation showed unauthorized software was placed on point-of-sale systems at the affected restaurants. Payments made online or by using self-pay, tabletop devices were not affected by the data breach.

Cardholders’ names, card numbers, expiration dates and card verification codes may have been breached. RMH officials said the breach, which was discovered Feb. 13, 2018, has been contained and that an investigation is ongoing.
