Can you feel it? That crispness in the air means fall is just around the corner. Ah, autumn...the season of cozy sweaters, pumpkin-flavored everything, and a great opportunity to review your finances!
This fall, we want to celebrate our 90th anniversary by doing what we do best: helping members strengthen their financial well-being. Read on for nine hygge-approved tips on how to make your fall budget-friendly!
- Shop at your local farmer’s market
Farmers markets give you the ultimate “shop local” cred! But buying from local vendors can be pricey. Here are some tips to shop smart at the farmers market.
- Do a lap (or two) first. That way you can scope out prices before you impulse buy something too expensive for your budget.
- Ask the vendor if they have bulk or discounted items. Often, folks will have “ugly” produce or a deal on bulk items.
- Buy in-season. Yes, local markets can carry off-season produce, too. In-season will not only be less expensive, but also fresher!
- Use SNAP/EBT benefits if you can. Most farmers markets let you exchange your SNAP for tokens, and according to the New Mexico Farmers' Marketing Association, you can double your SNAP for fresh fruits and produce at markets. The Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program that matches your fruit and vegetable purchases dollar for dollar. If you have a SNAP card, you are automatically eligible for this program.
