In 1979, what began as a small, dedicated group of citizens concerned about the unmet needs of animals has grown into an influential organization that is making a significant difference for New Mexico's animals and the communities in which they live. In New Mexico, the organization has found that education and economics have a direct impact on the well-being of wildlife and companion animals - in fact, some counties do not have animal shelters or animal control officers. To counteract those statistics, the organization has created programs for all ages that teach compassion and loose dog/bite safety. Additionally, a "read to the dogs" program lets children learn to read in a safe, non-judgmental way.
