For more than a century, the American Association of University Women has been the nation's leading voice promoting education and equality for women and girls. When AAUW members realized that having young women attend camp on a college or university campus — especially for those whose parents may not have gone to college — helps them see themselves seeking higher education, they founded Tech Trek. Tech Trek is an immersive, week-long science and math summer camp designed to develop rising eighth grade girls' interest, excitement, and self-confidence in STEM fields. Tech Trek started in 1998 in California, and in 14 years has grown to 15 camps on 13 college campuses nationwide. Since 2014, girls from New Mexico spend a week at New Mexico Tech in Socorro learning from female scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians.
